Caviar Pizza and Other Shocking Facts.
(2004-09-14 10:01:43) Written by Elaine
I was shocked by 2 ‘facts’ this week that I read on teletext. The first was that the average family spend £600 a month on groceries! I mean 600 quid! Yowzah! I reckon that can’t be right and there’s one super rich family somewhere (I’ll call them the Beelzebubs) that are spending £100, 000 + a month and it’s messing up the statistics. The Beelzebubs' daughter (Porka..erm no Porsche-ah) has a thing for takeaway caviar pizza. Anyway I blame them it’s all their fault. Maybe I should sue them for the shock and strain of having to pick myself up off the floor after reading that statistic.

The other ‘fact’ was discovered when I read a report about diabetes information websites. Some official, can’t remember if he was government or NHS, was saying that the sites are too difficult to understand as they cater to a reading ability of an educated 11-17 year old and the UK average reading ability was that of an educated 9 year old. WHAT!?*! Generations have spent 9-11 sodding years in school for this! I am still frothing at the mouth because of that one; I’ll have to clean the keyboard.
Running Log/Glucose eek!
(2004-09-14 09:43:36) Written by Elaine
I’m well on my way to losing another half a stone. I reckon another week and a half and it’ll be gone. Then it’s onwards and upwards to the next stone to lose. I’ve not been able to start running yet owing to the lack of decent shoes and a sports bra. What I’ve done instead is walk as much as possible and do 100 step ups each day in my kitchen ( I start with a different leg after 50). There’s a step down into it so it’s very convenient. I wave my arms about a lot in a kind of exercisey way as well. Remembering of course to do this before breakfast

On the health front things are not looking that rosey. Had the results of my glucose tolerance test back and I am definitely glucose tolerance impaired. A reading between, I think it’s 7 and 11.1, is glucose tolerance impaired and mine was 10. After 11.1 then you’re diabetic. However this doesn’t mean I will become a diabetic but the odds are stacked. At least it doesn’t have to be declared for insurance purposes like diabetes has to. This is treated by diet and exercise; well I’m already doing it so my Doc has nothing else he can do. I am determined not to let this get any further. I’m not that surprised though as there are 3 cases of diabetes type 2 in my family…sheesh. Bit scary though that I am at increased risk of cardio vascular disease eek! My flipping Doc didn’t tell me that, I had to find out myself. He isn’t the best Doc in the world but he’s very mild mannered.

Well I shall continue doing what I’m doing and I’m going to treat this as a challenge not an obstacle. I’m hoping next year when I have my annual fasting glucose test that it will be much improved.
Thrift

I’ve been doing really well with our money lately..not that I’ve ever been a spendthrift. I started designating Sunday as menu planning and shopping list making day. I plan all the main meals for the week and make a detailed shopping list. I shop on Monday morning as there’s seems to be a lot of marked down stuff then. So far, outside of blokey’s tobacco (which is around £10 per week) I’ve kept the weekly shopping down to £50 or under. Not bad considering we eat tons and tons of fruit and veg (including some organic) and we have 6 cats. I also try and buy flowers for the house as they cheer me up. I only buy them on sale. Today I got a bunch of LA lilies for 80p. I feel quite good about managing to be thriftier.
Beer and clangers

Had a bit of a dodgy week last week. Couldn’t do my walk on Friday properly as I had to have a glucose tolerance test which involves no food from 9 pm the previous day, getting up early to drink a mug of what is essentially glucose syrup, waiting 2 hours without a drink or food then getting a blood test. I felt really sick, at least I kept it down, apparently some don’t manage it so they’ll have to do it all over again. Yuk! Shortly after that had a pre booked massage/reflexology session which I walked to. It didn’t quite fit the 20 mins required (it was 15) but at least it was some walking and of course I walked back again. After that I lost 2 days to feeling poo. Seems par for the course as every treatment has involved 2 ill days afterwards. I should feel fabulous today but dd was staying with her dad yesterday so I had some ‘me’ time. I duly spent the time downing a bottle of beer and a glass of wine. Blokey cooked me a curry too. Woke up this morning with a clanger of a hangover. There’s no justice..waaah. I can’t even get a teensy weensy bit tiddly (it doesn’t take much) without getting a hangover…. Whatever happened to my cast iron constitution?? I hurt my hip and knee too but can’t go into how here, suffice to say it was aided and abetted by beer.
Paragraphs help!
(2004-09-01 10:37:43) Written by Elaine
This time I tried writing my diary straight on to the site rather than on Word then pasting it. I still can't get paragraphs :( I noticed Fee had managed to get some paragraphs...how'd you do it Fee? One draw back of writing directly on to the site is I don't check the text as much.. my running/walking log is typo city!
